SCPnet Autumn Events 2009

Day One: SCP Data Intelligence & Modelling Workshop

RAMEA Regional Energy and Emissions Database – Julius Mattai, AEA Technology
Julius presented an overview of the various data sources that are used to construct inventories of energy and emissions in the UK. He also described the key differences between the various emissions inventories available for the UK, including those for Government Office Regions.

Mosaic consumer classification system in application – Anne Owen, SEI
By combining Mosaic data, a comprehensive method of categorising UK consumer spending, with data on carbon emissions, Anne showed how this enables SEI to calculate the carbon footprints of UK residents and combined footprints for particular residential streets. In a stimulating presentation, Anne demonstrated an application of this methodology in the ‘Green Streets’ Project that seeks to reduce the carbon footprint of residents in York.

Sustainability Footprinting Update – Stuart Bond, WWF
Stuart provided an update on the OPEN-EU project, which is being carried out by a consortium of European organisations under the EU Commission FP7 funding programme.  The project aims to develop a new version of REAP (EUREAPA) covering carbon, ecological and water footprinting for EU regions, building on the outputs of the EXIOPOL project. The project will also create a new European SCP partnership to build evidence, share applications of EUREAPA and build capacity across Europe.

Water Footprint: Linking Consumption with Water Resources – Ashok Chapagain, WWF
The issue of ‘Virtual Water’, or the amount of water used in producing the goods and services we consume, is often overlooked in comparison to other environmental problems. Ashok gave an overview of the important developments and challenges in water accounting, describing some key findings along the way. For example, an alarming 208 litres of water is used in the production of one cup of latte, some of which is from water stressed areas.

Sustainability Modelling Workshop – Harry Walton, SCPnet & Environment Agency (facilitator)
In this session, delegates had the opportunity to reflect on the use of sustainability modelling for developing Regional Strategies.  There was particular focus on the REEIO and REAP tools, the challenges posed by the new Integrated Regional Strategies, and the ways in which SCPnet can help support its members in this key area.

The EUCO2 Project: The Greenhouse Gas Regional Inventory Protocol (GRIP) – Sebastian Carney, CURE
GRIP allows policy makers to build an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and then explore the emissions reductions that would be achieved in the future. Using an appealing, intuitive toolkit, GRIP allows high level policy makers to carry out this analysis themselves in a workshop setting, thereby increasing the ownership and impact of the findings. Sebastian gave an overview of this process, which has played a highly influential role in a large number of regions and city regions across the world. GRIP is now recognised by the Commission as one of only three tools approved across Europe for use in this area.
