Day Two: Networking Event - SCP & Well Being Indicators

Dan McCartney - IDeA - SD lens and NIs
The SD Lens is a set of 21 indicators that can be used by local authorities to assess progress towards sustainability in their area.  The Lens can be used to inform corporate strategies and facilitate benchmarking, annual analysis and comparisons between authorities. Dan described the current state of the tool and possible future developments.

Indicators of economic success, human well being & environmental protection: The IN-STREAM Project – Steve Arnold, University of Bath
Steve gave a thought-provoking presentation on the current academic thinking both on economic and well-being indicators currently used by policy makers and on possible alternatives to GDP.

Environmental Quality Index (EQI) – Anna Lorentzon, Environment Agency
The EQI began as part of a project to identify links between poor environmental quality and deprivation. It has evolved to become a useful index displayed as a spatial map of England environmental quality, which combines environmental quality measures with key constituents of the Index of Multiple Deprivation. It is included in the national sustainable development indicator set (number 60).

Experience with Sustainable Development Indicators and Wellbeing Measures – Stephen Hall, Defra
The national sustainable development indicator set, and in particular the summary booklet produced each year by Defra, has become a highly influential tool for capturing the quality of life in the UK. The regional set of indicators now comprises 46 of the 68 national indicators. Stephen focused on the well-being indicators in the indicator set, most notably those based on life satisfaction survey questions. He also highlighted the power of consultation in the development of the indicator set, which influenced the decision to include other new indicators such as aviation and embedded CO2. The SD indicator pocket book has had a circulation of some 60,000, mainly to schools.
