These indicators are region-specific, comparable, and standardised, and measure the core environmental elements of sustainability. All three take into account the direct and indirect pressures of consumption of products and services throughout the economic supply chain. This allows policy makers to take into account the production side of the economy and communicate this to consumers - the creators of the demand. REAP generates footprint results for the populations of every Local Authority area and English and Devolved Region in the UK. This is modelled by combining data on the consumption of goods and services with their production impact through every stage of the supply chain. REAP also contains a scenario editor which calculates footprint results based on changing supply chain efficiencies and patterns of consumption over time. For more details on the REAP model, visit
Why Use REAP?
Unique to the UK, REAP features a number of approaches that enable a policy maker to answer the "What If" question about the effects of policy on the environment helping to formulate strategies for local, regional and national government. The model provides quantified, objective results on a regional level that can substantially enhance the quality of analysis and assessments.
